Modern Day Idols

Idolatry is worshipping other things besides the One True God. Consistently throughout the Bible it is made very clear that idolatry is unacceptable. Here are just a few examples of modern day idols; Sports (football, basketball, golf, etc.) Greed, Wealth, Condo (sounds strange but Indianapolis has this in a bad way), your Children can be idols, “Your Stuff”, Facebook, TV, Power, Stubbornness, Bank accounts, Jobs, Power, Influence and Pride.

Anything that is lord over your life other than God is idolatry. The fact is that idolatry is a very serious and frequent violation of God’s truth and love. However, its allure has become so sophisticated and subtle in our day that we dismiss it, rationalize it, or even embrace it in ignorant bliss for lack of clear understanding and honest evaluation. I’ve been guilty of it as well. With the Meet ME Under The Bridge Ministry. I made it my life and I made it my everything. I fell into the “trap” that I’m “doing God’s work and doing His ministry”. He really doesn’t NEED me to do anything for Him, I NEED Him to do everything for me. Our God is a jealous God, “You must not have any other gods but Me” NLT

I love our God, because He corrects me, forgives me and takes me into His loving arms. He corrected me and lets “me” know He will have no others before HIM.

Quote from Billy Graham: “Take, for example, our preoccupation with money and material possessions. These aren’t necessarily wrong, of course; we need them to take care of our loved ones and make our lives comfortable,” Graham wrote. “But both can easily become “idols” that we slavishly follow and allow to become the most important things in our lives.”

Tozer said, “An idol of the mind is as offensive to God as an idol of the hand.” The danger of idolatry is not found simply in the things we can hold and label as idols. Idols are conceived deep in the human soul, evolving in the mind and poisoning Desiresthe will long before they are evidenced in behavior or objects. There are so many scriptures on idolatry, here are a few: Romans 1:23They traded that glory for the worship of idols made to look like earthly people. Isaiah 2:8 Their land is full of idols; they bow down to the work of their hands, to what their fingers have made. NIV Colossians 3:5 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. NIV Habakkuk 2:18 “Of what value is an idol carved by a craftsman? Or an image that teaches lies? For the one who makes it trusts in his own creation; he makes idols that cannot speak. NIV Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. 1 John 5:21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols. Deuteronomy 6:13 – 15 Fear the Lord your God, serve him only and take your oaths in His Name. Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and He will destroy you from the face of the land.

My point is… be very careful who or what you let control your life.

For me and my house we will serve the Lord.

Kathy
